A stalled build, taken over and relaunched in eight weeks

Pure Athlete streams video lessons from pro athletes and experts to young athletes, their parents, and their coaches. When its first build stalled with another team, we kept the live app running, built a replacement beside it, and launched it eight weeks after taking over.

The takeover

The live app kept running while we built its replacement

Members were already paying, so the app had to stay up while we worked. It had been made with a visual page builder, and 84% of its code was generated by that tool. That made every fix slow and hard to trust.

So we worked on two tracks. We shipped fixes to the live app in our first week, and started the replacement on Next.js and Sanity in our second. In week eight, pureathlete.com switched over to it.

The library

The library, moved by script instead of by hand

Lessons, episodes, collections, and expert profiles all lived inside the page builder. We exported them and wrote a script for each kind of record, so the library moved over without anyone retyping it.

The scripts linked videos to their sports, experts, and topics, and matched them to their files in Mux. Before launch, we audited the result and tracked down the videos whose files had gone missing.

What we built

A platform the Pure Athlete team runs themselves

Pure Athlete’s team publishes and arranges the site without waiting on a developer. We still support the platform and keep it current.

  • Pages

    Pages built from sections

Editors build pages from 16 kinds of section in Sanity, and preview a change on the real page before it goes live.

  • Browsing

    One library, many ways in

Members browse by sport, topic, expert, or athlete, play a collection as a playlist, or search the whole library.

  • Membership

    Free previews, then a plan

Visitors sign up with email or Google and get free previews of paid lessons. Checkout runs on Stripe without leaving the site.

  • Since launch

    Kept current

We have since upgraded the platform to Next.js 16, React 19, and Sanity 4, added analytics, and kept improving sign-in and the video player.
